Gaining Insight, Making Meaning

Individual Psychotherapy in Denver, Colorado

We are navigating unprecedented challenges in our world – a time of transformational change that has many of us feeling disconnected. A time in which we are searching, more than ever, for the support and care of others. I applaud you for seeking the support of consistent therapy and I am glad you found your way to my practice – let’s find out if I’m the right therapist for you!

I am a licensed clinical social worker with specific experience working with people with marginalized identities or from marginalized communities. I work with people from all different backgrounds who want to feel better, overcome trauma and shame, understand how the past still affects them and strive to be better versions of themselves.

My Approach

Therapeutic change is something done together; it is a dynamic process that occurs in relationship with another person. By noticing patterns, often unconscious ones, and increasing our awareness of them, we begin to understand why we think what we think, feel how we feel, and do what we do.  Whether you are seeking to feel better about yourself, address mood and anxiety, recover from traumatic experiences, connect more authentically to others, or address your relationship to drugs and alcohol; I can help you move towards a better life.

I tailor my approach to you.  This often means exploring the past to understand how it still affects you.   Sometimes this means we’ll focus on the present to increase your sense of security and safety, enhance your ability to recognize and respond to emotions, and build a sense of calmness and well-being.  Usually, we will do both.

We each come into therapy with unique experiences that inform our current ways of thinking and being. As we learn to be curious together about the workings of your internal system, and the family system that is the foundation of how you operate and relate to others, we can identify patterns that perhaps served you once but are impeding your growth and potential.  By understanding the stories that shape us, we can shift them into narratives of empowerment, growth, and change.  Together, we will emphasize the best parts of you, finding and building on your strengths and talents to work towards healing and wholeness.

“The things that bring people to psychotherapy are usually depression or anxiety and those are the psychological equivalent of fever.  They’re non-specific psychological responses to an enormous range of underlying things” – Dr. Jonathan Shedler

About Me

I have been licensed as a clinician, providing individual therapy,
for over ten years

Working in settings ranging from the academic to the frontline, from medical clinics to a research institute, I have worked deeply with issues of masculinity, sexuality, gender, race, dis/ability, and other aspects of identity and difference.  I completed a Bachelor of Science in Social Work at the Metropolitan State College of Denver (now Metropolitan State University of Denver) and a Masters in Social Work from the University of Toronto’s Factor-Inwentash Faculty of Social Work with a concentration in Diversity and Social Justice. I was an instructor at the University of Denver’s Graduate School of Social Work and received advanced training at the Denver Psychoanalytic Institute.  I completed training in Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) in 2019.

Through this range of experiences I have developed expertise in a number of areas including aspects of identity particularly associated with sexuality and gender; issues of trauma including relational trauma and personality disorders; compulsive behaviors related to substance use or sex; and struggles with mood, anxiety, and low self esteem.
